MASSAGGIO THAILANDESE - THAI MASSAGE

Un paio di anni fa Selvaggia Lucarelli pubblicò un articolo molto divertente in cui raccontava tra l'altro la sua esperienza di massaggio thailandese non proprio piacevole:

"I famosi massaggi. La densità dei centri massaggi a Bangkok è di circa novanta ad isolato. Scartati quelli in cui il lieto fine non è esattamente il mal di cervicale che non c’è più, restano quelli in cui delle gentili signorine ti massaggiano col metodo tailandese che sostanzialmente è una variante della thai boxe. Io sono incappata in una signorina di 90 chili a cui devo aver chiesto “Mi fa un massaggio?” sbagliando la fonetica perché lei ha evidentemente capito “Mi mena?” e ho scontato l’equivoco con un’ora di mazzate. Poi ti credo che nei centri massaggi tailandesi si pratica la prostituzione: anche io dopo mezz’ora di manrovesci avrei pagato perché mi si facesse qualsiasi altra cosa".

Fondamentalmente ha ragione, ma spero che con qualche consiglio possiate avere un'esperienza meno traumatica di quella raccontata dalla famosa giornalista. L'equivoco alla base di queste esperienze deludenti è che noi occidentali associamo l'idea del massaggio a carezzevoli manipolazioni epidermiche che raramente coinvolgono le masse muscolari, con l'uso di oli profumati, ecc... Mentre il massaggio tradizionale thailandese è tutt'altro. Infatti  per eseguire il massaggio thai la massaggiatrice utilizza diverse parti del corpo mani, pollici, palmi, gomiti, avambraccia, piedi, talloni, ginocchia ed effettua diversi tipi di “manipolazioni” compressioni, estensioni, torsioni, stiramenti, impastamenti, colpetti a mani giunte, scuotimenti, schiocchi, sollevamenti, bloccaggio del corpo e degli arti del massaggiato con le mani, coi piedi e colle ginocchia, "camminata" con i talloni e l'incavo dei piedi sulla schiena del massaggiato e posizioni che richiamano le asanas dello Hatha Yoga. Perchè lo scopo del massaggio thai non è liberarvi dallo stress ma il ripristino della circolazione del prana attraverso i canali energetici. Quindi se siete in Thailandia come turisti ed entrate per la prima volta in un centro massaggi evitate di chiedere un "vero massaggio tradizionale" perchè ne uscirete segnati nel vero senso della parola e poi andrete a raccontare in giro di quanto siano incapaci le thailandesi a fare massaggi perchè in realtà sono solo delle prostitute...

Nel caso siate qui solo per turismo andate con fiducia a farvi un massaggio ma chiedete solo massaggi all'olio, trattamenti scrub, ecc...al massimo un massaggio ai piedi se proprio volete azzardare...

Per quanto riguarda Chiang Mai consiglio vivamente i centri della catena Lila che ritengo essere i migliori nel rapporto qualità/prezzo. Sono centri interamente gestiti da ex-detenute che sono state avviate professionalmente durante il periodo di detenzione grazie ad un progetto gestito dal ministero della Giustizia. I prezzi sono contenuti, le massaggiatrici sono tutte di buon livello, gli ambienti puliti con arredi per lo più in legno ispirati alla tradizione. 

Ovviamente sono a conoscenza del tema "happy ending", non so quanto sia effettivamente diffuso ma tenete sempre in mente che qualsiasi forma di prostituzione è vietata dalla legge thailandese.

A couple of years ago, Selvaggia Lucarelli published a very funny article in which she recounted her experience of a Thai massage that was not exactly pleasant:

"The famous massages. The density of massage centres in Bangkok is about ninety per block. Apart from those where the happy ending is not exactly the neck pain that no longer exists, there are still those where nice ladies massage you with the Thai method, which is basically a variant of Thai boxing. I ran into a lady weighing 90 kilos to whom I must have asked "Can I get a massage?", getting the phonetics wrong because she obviously understood "Are you going to hit me?" and I paid for the misunderstanding with an hour of beatings. Then I believe you that in Thai massage parlours prostitution is practised: even I would have paid for anything else after half an hour of backhands".

Basically she is right, but I hope that with some advice you can have a less traumatic experience than the one told by the famous journalist. The misunderstanding behind these disappointing experiences is that we in the West associate the idea of massage with caressing epidermal manipulations that rarely involve the muscle masses, with the use of scented oils, etc. ... Traditional Thai massage, on the other hand, is something quite different. In fact, to perform a Thai massage the masseuse uses different parts of the body hands, thumbs, palms, elbows, forearms, feet, heels, knees and performs different types of "manipulations" compressions, extensions, twists, stretches, kneading, tapping with joined hands, shaking, snapping, lifting, blocking the body and limbs of the massaged person with hands, feet and knees, "walking" with the heels and the hollow of the feet on the back of the massaged person and positions that recall the asanas of Hatha Yoga. Because the purpose of Thai massage is not to free you from stress but to restore the circulation of prana through the energy channels. So if you are in Thailand as tourists and you enter for the first time in a massage centre, avoid asking for a "real traditional massage" because you will come out marked in the true sense of the word and then you will tell people how bad Thai women are at giving massages because they are really just prostitutes...

If you are here just for tourism, go with confidence to get a massage but ask only for oil massages, scrub treatments, etc. ... at most a foot massage if you really want to risk ...

As far as Chiang Mai is concerned, I highly recommend the centres in the Lila chain, which I think are the best in terms of quality/price ratio. They are centres entirely managed by ex-prisoners who have been professionally initiated during their period of detention thanks to a project managed by the Ministry of Justice. The prices are reasonable, the masseuses are all of a good standard, the rooms are clean and the furnishings are mostly wooden and inspired by tradition. 

Obviously I am aware of the "happy ending" theme, I don't know how widespread it really is but always keep in mind that any form of prostitution is prohibited by Thai law.
