CHIANG MAI - CENTRO CITTA'- Taphae Gate Wat Phra Singh CHIANG MAI - CITY CENTRE - Taphae Gate Wat Phra Singh

(SCROLL DOWN FOR ENGLISH)

(ENGLISH VERSION)

Chiang Mai is a beautiful city where in recent years some problems have become more acute, in particular pollution and traffic. The city extends between the slopes of Doi Suthep and the left bank of the Ping River. The urban core is completely flat, the old town is a square, bounded by a moat and walls, the remains of which are still clearly visible in all their extension. The city has experienced a tourist boom in the last thirty years, that is, after eradicating the opium poppy cultivation that extended into the far north of Thailand. A further driver of tourism has been the extension of the airport, which has become international in scope thanks to the work of Thaksin Shinawatra, prime minister at the time.

Chiang Mai is well worth a visit, very often those who come for the first time return several times afterwards. The city's charm lies in its quiet, slow pace and peaceful atmosphere. There is no petty crime such as robberies, muggings or flat burglaries.

In case it is the first time you go to Chiang Mai I indicate some of the tourist sites to see starting from the city centre. I suggest you start your visit from the main gate, called Tapae Gate (in Thai pratou Tapae).

The outer side is a large square where events of various kinds often take place and is the meeting point for political demonstrations, when they are allowed. Through the gate one finds oneself on the central street, Rachadamnoen road, which crosses practically the entire width of the square up to Wat Phra Singh.

Inside the temple compound, on the left is the chapel where the inthakin, the founding pillar of the city, is kept.
I write about it without ever having been able to see it as women are forbidden to enter this sacred place.
Every year in Chiang Mai there is a seven-day festival to honour the Inthakin, which is honoured with votive offerings.
Inthakin is honoured with votive offerings and flowers, singing and dancing.
In addition, entire streets are closed off and uninterrupted rows of stalls with typical Thai food appear on the sides.
As I was saying, the Inthakin chapel is located in the compound of Wat Phra Singh, one of the most important temples in the city.
Inside is the statue of Phra Buddha Sihing, apparently originally from the island of Ceylon. This statue is highly venerated and is carried in procession during important festivals such as Songkran.

The construction of Wat Phra Singh dates back to 1345. Among the various buildings present, it is important to point out the library with its characteristic guardians: two lions emerging from the mouth of a Makara, a water creature.

CHIANG MAI UNA CITTA' NUOVA - CHIANG MAI A NEW CITY

(SCROLL DOWN FOR ENGLISH)

(ENGLISH VERSION)

A city whose most venerated and frequented shrine is just outside the centre on a hill, clearly visible from wherever you live. A city whose historic centre is clearly marked by ancient walls.

A city with one of the country's most important universities. A city on the plains nestled at the foot of the mountains, in short almost 'an old woman with soft hips, her breasts on the Po plain and her ass on the hills' (F. Guccini). Because I'm not talking about red Bologna, but Chiang Mai, the "rose of the North", and "new city" is the literal translation of its name. I have lived Bologna and now I live Chiang Mai. I use "live" in transitive mode because I think it is the correct way to describe being part of the place where you live. For me, as an Italian, it was easier to perceive the soul of Bologna, but it is very nice to feel the soul of Chiang Mai more and more every day. This city was the capital of the Lanna empire from 1296 to 1775 AD. Proud of its geographical isolation, it is historically one of the earliest examples of a city-state, capital of a confederation of other towns. To this day, the word Lanna is used to refer to a number of local businesses and its people are proud to be heirs to the kingdom from 'a million rice fields', a translation of the word 'Lanna'.
