ELEPHANT PARADE - L'ARTE IN SOCCORSO DEGLI ELEFANTI

Girando per Chiang Mai è facile imbattersi in alcune sculture che reinterpretano gli elefanti in modi molto fantasiosi. Si tratta di pezzi d'arte prodotti in relazione alla Elephant Parade, un'impresa sociale nata per finanziare nel lungo periodo iniziative di cura e protezione degli elefanti. Tutto ha inizio quando  Marc e Mike Spits, padre e figlio, nel 2006 mentre sono in vacanza si imbattono nella storia di Mosha, l'elefantessa che ha perso parte di una zampa a causa di una mina lungo il confine con il Myanmar. I due decidono di creare un'iniziativa che sia redditizia nel lungo periodo per garantire a Mosha tutto il sostegno di cui necessita. Quando rimane ferita Mosha ha sette mesi, con un intervento eccezionale le viene applicata una protesi che deve essere sostituita ogni anno fino al termine della sua crescita, intorno ai venti anni. 

La Elephant Parade avrà un successo tale che, oltre a garantire le cure a Mosha, ogni anno finanzia diversi progetti dedicati al recupero e alla cura degli elefanti. 

L'idea di fondo è l'organizzazione di

 mostre d'arte in cui sono esposti gli elefanti appositamente creati da artisti o anche celebrità di varia provenienza, ogni statua della Elephant Parade è un'opera d'arte unica. Al termine di ogni mostra, un certo numero di statue vengono messe all'asta a beneficio dei programmi di welfare e protezione degli elefanti. Il 20% dell'utile netto della Elephant Parade viene donato a progetti di benessere e conservazione degli elefanti in tutto il mondo. L'impegno dell'impresa è di donare un minimo di 50.000 euro all'anno. Oltre all'attività espositiva esiste anche una produzione a tiratura limitata di repliche delle opere anche in dimensioni ridotte che sono acquistabili presso diversi punti vendita e anche online sul loro sito. 

Oltre a questo potete anche voi produrre la vostra opera d'arte. Sono in vendita infatti anche dei kit, le Art Box, con l'elefante in bianco che potete colorare come preferite nel caso abbiate doti artistiche. Questo vi permetterà anche di partecipare ad un contest e vincere la produzione della vostra opera con dimensioni di un metro e mezzo di altezza per una successiva mostra e riceverete inoltre la replica nelle dimensioni di 30 centimetri. 

Personalmente amo molto questa iniziativa e negli anni ho acquistato alcuni esemplari da regalare ma anche uno tutto per me, l'idea poi è anche quella di ampliare la collezione.

Walking around Chiang Mai it is easy to come across some sculptures that reinterpret elephants in very imaginative ways. These are pieces of art produced in connection with the Elephant Parade, a social enterprise set up to finance long-term elephant care and protection initiatives. It all began when Marc and Mike Spits, father and son while on holiday in 2006 , came across the story of Mosha, the elephant who lost part of her leg because of a mine along the border with Myanmar. The two decide to create an initiative that is profitable in the long run to provide Mosha with all the support she needs. When she is injured, Mosha is seven months old, and with exceptional intervention she is given a prosthesis that has to be replaced every year until the end of her growth, around twenty years old.

The Elephant Parade will be so successful that, in addition to providing care for Mosha, it finances several elephant recovery and care projects each year.
The basic idea is the organization of
Art exhibitions displaying elephants specially created by artists or even celebrities of various backgrounds, each statue of the Elephant Parade is a unique work of art. At the end of each exhibition, a number of statues are auctioned off for the benefit of welfare and elephant protection programmes. 20% of the Elephant Parade's net income is donated to elephant welfare and conservation projects around the world. The company's commitment is to donate a minimum of 50,000 euros per year. In addition to the exhibition activity, there is also a limited series of replicas of the works, even in small sizes, which can be purchased at various points of sale and also online on their website.

In addition to this you can also produce your own work of art. They are also on sale kits, the Art Box, with the elephant in white that you can color as you like if you have artistic skills. This will also allow you to participate in a contest and win the production of your work with dimensions of one and a half meters high for a subsequent exhibition and you will also receive the replica in dimensions of 30 cm.

Personally I love this initiative and over the years I bought some copies to gift but also one for me, the idea is also to expand the collection.

GLI ELEFANTI E NOI - THE ELEPHANTS AND US

Negli ultimi anni un'attività in forte espansione nei dintorni di Chiang Mai è costituita dai rifugi per gli elefanti. La Thailandia ha un forte legame con questo animale tanto da farne il suo simbolo. Graficamente spesso la conformazione del paese è paragonata alla testa di un elefante. Qui al nord l'elefante è stato a lungo impiegato come forza lavoro per il trasporto di legname e anche come mezzo di trasporto. Molti degli animali che si trovano nei rifugi provengono proprio dallo sfruttamento lavorativo e ora non sono in grado di tornare alla vita selvatica. Fino a qualche anno fa la maggior parte di questi centri offirva ai turisti la possibilità di una passeggiata in sella all'elefante, ma una crescente consapevolezza della sofferenza patita dagli animali a causa di questa pratica ha fatto sì che oggi solo pochissimi centri offrono questo tipo di attrazione.

Io ho visitato due di questi centri il primo si chiama "Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care", il secondo è il "Kanta Elephant Sanctuary" La prima volta sono andata insieme a mia nipote e al suo compagno per una visita di mezza giornata. Il centro provvede anche al servizio di trasporto, "Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care" si trova a Sud di Chiang Mai nella zona oltre Mae Wan in una radura in mezzo alla foresta. Lo staff è costituito da tre ragazzi di etnia karen e al momento della mia visita si prendevano cura di appena tre elefanti, tra cui un cucciolo di otto mesi e non so quanti quintali...

All'inizio della visita eravamo solo noi tre ed abbiamo avuto la possibilità di un contatto molto immediato con i tre ospiti del centro. I mahut ci hanno spiegato come porgere loro il cibo e anche perchè usare certe parole nel farlo.

Successivamente siamo stati raggiunti da un gruppo di ragazzi che avrebbero trascorso qui l'intera giornata e qualcuno anche pernottato.
Ricordo davvero con piacere la tranquillità del posto e l'atmosfera. Prendersi cura degli elefanti è davvero emozionante. La loro docilità è contagiosa, ti senti in pace nel momento stesso in cui riesci ad accarezzarli e a prenderti cura di loro.

Le attività che si possono svolgere oltre a preparare il cibo sono il bagno di fango e poi il bagno di pulizia nel fiume. Al "Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care" i tre elefanti sono stati tutti molto docili e socievoli. Il bagno nel fiume ovviamente è stata l'attività più apprezzata da tutti: animali e visitatori.

Nella visita di mezza giornata, mattina, è incluso anche il pranzo e l'acqua da bere oltre al trasporto da e per il vostro alloggio.



Il "Kanta Elephant Sanctuary" l'ho visitato nell'ambito di una attività svolta con i colleghi dell'azienda in cui lavoro.

"Kanta Elephant Sanctuary" si trova a nord di Chiang Mai. Anche qui il servizio di trasporto è compreso nel prezzo. La struttura è molto grande e può ospitare diversi gruppi contemporaneamente e ognuno si prende cura di un discreto gruppo di elefanti. A differenza del "Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care" non ci vengono detti i nomi degli animali di cui ci prenderemo cura, ma dopo una prima attività uno dei mahut ci farà una breve lezione sugli elefanti in generale e su come comportarci nell'approcciarli. Poi abbiamo provveduto a preparare "la medicina" e a somministrarla. La giornata si è conclusa anche qui con il bagno nel torrente. Questa attività è molto coinvolgente ed è bello vedere come sia apprezzata da questi animali, che interagiscono anche giocando a loro volta.

Questa struttura è molto grande e ha un numero molto elevato di elefanti. Siamo stati anche qui mezza giornata ma di pomeriggio.

Personalmente ho apprezzato di più il contesto di "Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care" sia per la bellezza della radura sia per un senso di maggiore intimità avendo a che fare solo con tre elefanti. In ogni caso qualunque sia la vostra scelta prima di prenotare verificate sempre che la struttura a cui vi state rivolgendo non offra passeggiate con sella e nessun tipo di attività che metta in ridicolo gli animali forzandoli a giochi di tipo circense.

In recent years, a booming business around Chiang Mai has been elephant shelters. Thailand has such a strong connection with this animal that it has become its symbol. Graphically, the shape of the country is often compared to an elephant's head. Here in the north, the elephant has long been used as a labour force to transport timber and also as a means of transport. Many of the animals in the shelters come from labour exploitation and are now unable to return to the wild. Until a few years ago, most of these centres offered tourists the possibility of an elephant ride, but a growing awareness of the suffering of the animals due to this practice has meant that today only very few centres offer this type of attraction.

I visited two of these centres the first one is called "Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care", the second one is the "Kanta Elephant Sanctuary". The first time I went with my niece and her partner for a half-day visit. Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care is located south of Chiang Mai in the area beyond Mae Wan in a clearing in the middle of the forest. The staff consists of three boys of Karen ethnicity and at the time of my visit they were taking care of just three elephants, including an eight-month-old cub and I don't know how many quintals....

At the beginning of the visit it was just the three of us and we had a very immediate contact with the three guests of the centre. The Mahuts explained to us how to give them food and also why they use certain words when doing so.

Afterwards we were joined by a group of young people who were going to spend the whole day here and some of them even stayed overnight.

I really remember with pleasure the tranquility of the place and the atmosphere. Taking care of the elephants is really exciting. Their docility is contagious, you feel at peace the moment you can caress them and take care of them.

The activities you can do apart from preparing food are mud bathing and then a cleansing bath in the river. At Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care the three elephants were all very docile and sociable. Bathing in the river was obviously the most popular activity with everyone - animals and visitors alike.

Included in the half-day, morning visit is lunch and water to drink as well as transport to and from your accommodation.

I visited the 'Kanta Elephant Sanctuary' as part of an activity carried out with colleagues from the company where I work.

"Kanta Elephant Sanctuary is located north of Chiang Mai. Here too, transport is included in the price. The facility is very large and can accommodate several groups at the same time and each one takes care of a discrete group of elephants. Unlike the "Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care" we are not told the names of the animals we will be caring for, but after an initial activity one of the mahuts will give us a short lesson on elephants in general and how to approach them. We then proceeded to prepare 'the medicine' and administer it. The day also ended with a bath in the creek. This activity is very engaging and it's great to see how it is enjoyed by these animals, who also interact by playing with each other.

This facility is very large and has a very large number of elephants. We also stayed here half a day but in the afternoon.

Personally I enjoyed the setting at Hilltribe's elephant Sanctuary and Care more, both for the beauty of the clearing and for a greater sense of intimacy having to deal with only three elephants. In any case, whatever your choice, before booking always make sure that the structure you are using does not offer saddle rides and any type of activity that ridicules the animals by forcing them into circus-like games.
