IO E LA THAILANDIA - THAILAND AND ME

...io e la Thailandia ci conosciamo da 25 anni, pezzi di vita importanti, partenze, ritorni, esperienze profonde, di quelle che ti cambiano non tanto la vita ma l'anima.

Sono arrivata in Thailandia la prima volta il 1° luglio del 1994 e per nove anni sono stata responsabile "volontaria" in un centro di accoglienza per bambini, figli della povertà, provenienti più che altro dagli slum a nord di Bangkok.

Ho vissuto nel centro fino al gennaio del 2003, nove anni intensi in cui ho potuto toccare con mano la miseria umana ma anche essere testimone di tante belle storie. Quando sono partita ero convinta che non avrei mai più avuto occasione di tornare a vivere in Thailandia, eppure sentivo che qualcosa era rimasto in sospeso.

Una volta tornata in Italia ho iniziato a studiare ed approfondire la conoscenza della storia thailandese. Questo poi mi ha portato per alcuni anni a collaborare per una importante rivista accademica "Asia Maior", dove ho pubblicato articoli di storia contemporanea thailandese dal 2008 al 2014. Sullo stesso argomento ho rilasciato anche delle interviste a Radio Vaticana.

Poi nel 2013 per uno di quegli scherzi del destino mi sono traferita di nuovo qui, ma questa volta a Chiang Mai nel profondo nord. Non più per volontariato ma per lavoro. Da quando sono qui continuo ad approfondire la conoscenza del paese e a visitarlo anche nelle sue mete meno conosciute ma che hanno ugualmente motivi di attrazione. Ogni tanto collaboro con Radio Città Fuijko con alcuni contributi sugli avvenimenti più importanti nel paese. Radio Città Fuijko si avvale per la Thailandia anche di un altro valido corrispondente, Vitaliano Civitanova, potete trovare i suoi e i miei contributi digitando la parola "Thailandia" nel sito web della radio.

Quella che sto vivendo ora è un'altra Thailandia, fatta di vita quotidiana da "expat" e anche di studio della lingua e della cultura locale.

In un modo o nell'altro mi sono convinta che questa terra in qualche modo mi stia ringraziando per quello che ho dato ai suoi figli più vulnerabili per tanti anni. Un premio in effetti è arrivato qualche anno fa. Alcune delle bambine di cui mi sono presa cura mi hanno rintracciato su Facebook e così ho anche avuto l'occasione di incontrarle...l'emozione di quei giorni è un regalo prezioso che mi scalda quando penso di essere solo una inutile fancazzista!

...Thailand and me have known each other for 25 years, important pieces of life, departures, returns, profound experiences, the kind that change not so much your life but your soul.

I arrived in Thailand for the first time on 1 July 1994 and for nine years I was a 'volunteer' in charge of a shelter for children, sons of poverty, mostly from the slums of northern Bangkok.

I lived in the centre until January 2003, nine intense years in which I was able to experience human misery at first hand but also witness many beautiful stories. When I left, I was convinced that I would never have the chance to go back and live in Thailand, but I felt that something was left unfinished.

Once back in Italy I started to study and deepen my knowledge of Thai history. This then led me to collaborate for a few years with an important academic journal "Asia Maior", where I published articles on contemporary Thai history from 2008 to 2014. I have also given interviews on the same subject to Vatican Radio.

Then in 2013 by one of those tricks of fate I moved back here, but this time to Chiang Mai in the deep north. No longer as a volunteer but for work. Since I've been here, I've continued to deepen my knowledge of the country and to visit its lesser-known destinations that are equally attractive. From time to time I collaborate with Radio Città Fuijko with some contributions on the most important events in the country. What I am experiencing now is another Thailand, made up of daily life as an expat and also of studying the local language and culture.

One way or another, I have convinced myself that this land is somehow thanking me for what I have given to its most vulnerable children for so many years. An award actually arrived a few years ago. Some of the children I took care of tracked me down on Facebook and so I had the chance to meet them... the emotion of those days is a precious gift that warms me up when I think I am just a useless loafer!
