LA FINE DI UN'ERA: CHIUDE LA SCALA DI BANGKOK - THE END OF AN ERA: THE BANGKOK'S SCALA CLOSES

Il post di oggi è dedicato ad un luogo dove non sono mai stata, che ho solo visto dall'esterno, ma del quale conoscevo il ruolo come punto di riferimento per gli amanti del cinema. Si tratta dell'ultimo cinema a sala unica della Thailandia: La Scala di Bangkok, inaugurato nel 1969 la cui denominazione era ovviamente ispirata al celebre teatro milanese. La Scala chiuderà definitivamente il 5 luglio. Sono rimasta molto colpita per la scelta dei film da proiettare nell'ultimo giorno di attività:

Due film e due documentari e i due film sono entrambi di autori italiani e mi sembra sia davvero simbolicamente struggente che l'ultima proiezione sia dedicata a (Nuovo) Cinema Paradiso di Tornatore. 

La Scala ha svolto un ruolo importante prima come cinema popolare con i suoi mille posti e poi ritagliandosi uno spazio per la proiezione di film retrò e di nicchia ma sempre a prezzi più bassi rispetto ai vari multisala dei centri commerciali.

Indubbiamente al suo fascino ha contribuito la sua particolare architettura ispirata all'art decò, enfatizzata nella hall dove delle eleganti colonne si uniscono in un soffitto a volte, notevoli anche le due rampe di scale che conducono al secondo piano sormontate da un gigantesco lampadario a cinque livelli di fattura italiana. 

La sua chiusura è dovuta a progetti che l'università Chulalongkorn, proprietaria del terreno dove sorge il cinema, sta realizzando. Dispiace davvero perdere un luogo storico che ha contribuito a far conoscere il cinema d'autore sia internazionale sia thailandese.

Lo storico del teatro Philip Jablon in una intervista al giornale Coconuts Bangkok ha affermato:

"La chiusura della Scala segnerà la fine di un impero cinematografico a conduzione familiare che un tempo dominava il settore delle rassegne cinematografiche in Thailandia. Il grande vecchio teatro è l'ultimo palazzo cinematografico del paese e probabilmente il miglior cinema rimasto nel sud-est asiatico. È davvero la fine di un'era"

Today's post is dedicated to a place where I've never been, that I've only seen from the outside, but whose role I knew as a reference point for film lovers. This is the last cinema with a single theatres in Thailand: La Scala in Bangkok, inaugurated in 1969, whose name was obviously inspired by the famous Milanese theatre. La Scala will close definitively on 5 July. I was very impressed by the choice of films to be shown on the last day of activity:

 

Two films and two documentaries and the two films are both by Italian authors and I think it's really symbolically heartwarming that the last screening is dedicated to Cinema Paradiso by Tornatore. 

La Scala played an important role first as a popular cinema with its thousand seats and then carving out a space for the screening of retro and niche films but always at lower prices than the various multiplexes in the malls.

Undoubtedly a contribution to its charm has been made by its particular architecture inspired by art deco, emphasized in the lobby where elegant columns join in a vaulted ceiling, also noteworthy are the two flights of stairs leading to the second floor surmounted by a giant chandelier with five levels of Italian workmanship.

Its closure is due to projects that Chulalongkorn University, which owns the land where the cinema is located, is carrying out. It's a real shame to lose a historic place that has helped to raise awareness of both international and Thai auteur cinema.

Theatre historian Philip Jablon said in an interview with Coconuts Bangkok newspaper:

“[T]he closure of the Scala will mark the end of a family-run movie theater empire that once dominated the movie exhibition market in Thailand. The grand old theater is the country’s last operating movie palace and arguably the finest movie theater left in Southeast Asia. It’s truly the end of an era”.
