Questo scambio di messaggi segna in qualche modo l'inizio della storia. Erano appena uscite le prime notizie su questo nuovo virus che aveva iniziato a colpire la città cinese di Wuhan e con altri amici andammo ad assistere ai festeggiamenti del capodanno della comunità cinese di Chiang Mai.

Una serata davvero piacevole in cui non immaginavamo minimamente quanto sarebbe successo di lì a breve. 

Il mese di febbraio trascorre abbastanza normalmente, giungono notizie dall'Italia di forme di isteria, i negozi cinesi vengono disertati per non dire dei ristoranti, alcuni asiatici subiscono aggressioni colpevoli solo di avere facce da cinesi. Come sempre nel corso delle epidemie le folle hanno bisogno di identificare una categoria di persone come colpevoli. 

Qui a Chiang Mai gli incendi quest'anno sono vicinissimi alla città, così abbiamo iniziato a portare le mascherine già a gennaio per difenderci dalle pm2.5,  forse questa abitudine ci preserverà dalla diffusione del contagio...

Intanto i la presenza dei turisti cinesi crolla, tra l'altro sembra che Chiang Mai fosse la meta prediletta per le vacanze dei cittadini di Wuhan. Cominciano ad arrivare notizie della quarantena imposta ai cittadini delle zone origine del primo focolaio. 

Ogni giorno controllo le notizie circa la Thailandia i casi sono pochissimi e praticamente tutti di importazione. Mi imbatto poi in una informazione che corro subito a verificare, uno dei ministri ha dichiarato che si sentono tranquilli perchè a novembre nel Global Index della World Health Organization la Thailandia è al sesto posto nella classifica per i paesi in grado di affrontare un'epidemia. 

A metà febbraio i contagi sono 35, il 15 marzo 114 e io inizio a mettermi in quarantena da sola, anticipando pero' di poco le prime decisioni di lockdown disposte dalle amministrazioni locali e dal governo. Bangkok e Chiang Mai sono le prime città a chiudersi: chiuse tutte le attività non essenziali, chiusura dei bar e poi dei ristorantiche possono fare solo consegne a domicilio. Progressivamente le linee aeree annunciano la sospensione dei voli domestici, mentre diventa sempre più difficile entrare in Thailandia.

Nel frattempo non mancano anche qui forme di isteria xenofoba e dato che il Covid-19 ha iniziato a diffondersi con l'arrivo di alcuni italiani e di thai di ritorno dall'Italia accade che perfino il ministro della sanità, xenofobo quanto Salvini, parli di "virus italiano" suscitando l'ira del nostro ambasciatore, ottenendo poi delle scuse ufficiali. Per qualche giorno e per la prima volta mi sento in difficoltà quando mi chiedono da dove vengo. 

Intanto sono scattate anche tutte le attività di prevenzione prima di entrare in qualsiasi ufficio o supermercato gli addetti alla sicurezza ti misurano la febbre e puoi entrare solo se indossi la mascherina e dopo aver disinfettato le mani.

Alcuni supermercati all'ingresso hanno collocati un breve tunnel con tubi in pvc che spruzzano disinfettante, del disinfettante viene spruzzato anche agli ingressi della Wing 41 un'area militare aperta solo agli autorizzati con apposito permesso. La dimostrazione del livello di preparazione del paese è data dal fatto che le mascherine non sono mai mancate e sono anche state adottate delle limitazioni per evitare forme di accaparramento. Il disinfettante per le mani è disponibile ovunque e gratuitamente, ma lo si puo' anche acquistare a prezzi normali. Ovviamente la stampa ha dato ampio risalto a dei raid compiuti dalla polizia per chiudere delle attività che avevano aumentato i prezzi delle mascherine, arrestandone i proprietari.

Il 30 marzo ho appuntamento per una visita di controllo al Lanna Hospital e sono un po' preoccupata sapendo come in Italia molti ospedali sono stati dei focolai dell'infezione. Invece ho trovato un livello di attenzione elevatissimo e tutti gli operatori, dagli amministrativi, alle infermiere fino ai medici, tutti dotati di dispositivi di protezione. Ovviamente spero di dover tornare in ospedale solo quando tutto questo sarà finito ma mi sono sentita assolutamente al sicuro.

Quando Bangkok ha deciso il lockdown molte persone sono partite per tornare nei propri villaggi di origine. E' accaduto allora che in molti villaggi abbiano radunato gli abitanti e costruito delle barriere in bambù er impedire l'ingresso a chi arrivava da fuori che è stato fatto entrare solo dopo aver trascorso 14 giorni in quarantena. Dimostrando quindi che la preparazione per evitare la diffusione del contagio è davvero capillare e diffusa a tutti i livelli. 

Dal 3 aprile è in vigore in tutto il paese il coprifuoco dalle 22:00 alle 04:00 ogni sera tornando a casa dal lavoro trovo uno o dueposti di blocco, consegno loro i documenti loro mi fanno sempre delle domande di verifica, rispondo parte in inglese e parte in thai, poi mi lasciano andare. Sui giornali leggo che ogni notte vengono arrestate almeno cinquanta persone per aver violato il coprifuoco.

Capitolo a parte meritano le precauzioni prese nei singoli condomini. Prima di tutto sono state chiuse tutte le piscine condominiali e invitato a comunicare all'amministrazione di condominio nel caso si abbia la febbre o se sia rientrati da un viaggio all'estero. Poi sono stati collocati i flaconi di disinfettante per le mani prima del portone e poi su un tavolino tra gli ascensori. Gli ascensori sono stati divisi in tre con il nastro adesivo sul pavimento e ora possono salirci solo tre persone solo se indossano la mascherine e pregati stare rivolti verso l'esterno.

Ecco a volte ti sfiora il pensiero che si stia cadendo in comportamenti ossessivo-compulsivi ma poi basta uno sguardo a qualche grafico e pensi che l'hai scampata bella a trovarti in Thailandia allo scoppio di questa pandemia.

Spero che questa immane tragedia serva da lezione ai paesi occidentali, perchè non è assolutamente un caso che i paesi del Sud Est Asiatico stiano riuscendo a contenere il contagio e vi consiglio la lettura di questo articolo Ernesto Burgio: “2 o 3 cose che so su questa pandemia".

This exchange of messages somehow marks the beginning of the story. The first news had just come out about this new virus that had started to affect the Chinese city of Wuhan and with other friends we went to the New Year celebrations of the Chinese community of Chiang Mai.

It was a really enjoyable evening where we had no idea what was going to happen in the near future. 

The month of February goes by quite normally, news from Italy of hysteria, Chinese shops are deserted, not to mention restaurants, some Asians suffer assaults guilty only of having Chinese faces. As always during epidemics, crowds need to identify a category of people as guilty. 

Here in Chiang Mai the fires this year are very close to the city, so we started wearing masks in January to defend ourselves from the pm2.5, maybe this habit will keep us from the spread of the contagion...

Meanwhile, the presence of Chinese tourists collapses, among other things it seems that Chiang Mai was the favorite holiday destination of the citizens of Wuhan. News of the quarantine imposed on the citizens of the areas of origin of the first outbreak is beginning to arrive. 

Every day I check the news about Thailand there are very few cases and practically all of them are imported. Then I come across a piece of information that I immediately run to verify, one of the ministers has declared that they feel calm because in November in the Global Index of the World Health Organization Thailand is at the sixth place in the ranking for countries able to face an epidemic. 

In mid-February there are 35 infections, on 15 March 114 and I start to quarantine myself, just ahead of the first lockdown decisions made by the local government and the central government. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the first cities to close: all non-essential activities are closed, bars and then restaurants can only make home deliveries. Progressively the airlines announce the suspension of domestic flights, while it becomes increasingly difficult to enter Thailand.

In the meantime there is no lack of xenophobic hysteria and since Covid-19 has begun to spread with the arrival of some Italians and Thai returning from Italy, it happens that even the health minister, as xenophobic as Salvini, speaks of "Italian virus", arousing the anger of our ambassador, then obtaining an official apology. For a few days and for the first time I feel in difficulty when they ask me where I come from. 

In the meantime, all the prevention activities have also taken place before entering any office or supermarket the security staff will measure your fever and you can enter only if you wear the mask and after having disinfected your hands. Some supermarkets at the entrance have placed a short tunnel with PVC pipes that spray disinfectant, disinfectant is also sprayed at the entrances of Wing 41 a military area open only to authorized people with special permission. The proof of the country's level of preparation is that the masks have never been missing and restrictions have also been adopted to avoid hoarding. Hand disinfectant is available everywhere and free of charge, but you can also buy it at normal prices. Obviously the press has given ample emphasis to raids by the police to close down activities that had increased the prices of the masks, arresting the owners. 

On March 30th I have an appointment for a check-up at Lanna Hospital and I am a bit worried knowing how many hospitals in Italy have been outbreaks of the infection. Instead I found a very high level of attention and all the operators, from the administration to the nurses to the doctors, all equipped with protective devices. Obviously I hope to return to the hospital only when all this is over but I felt absolutely safe.

When Bangkok decided on the lockdown, many people left to return to their home villages. What happened then was that in many of the villages they rounded up the inhabitants and built bamboo barriers to prevent people coming in from outside who were only let in after spending 14 days in quarantine. Thus demonstrating that the preparation to prevent the spread of the contagion is really capillary and widespread at all levels.

Since April 3 is in force throughout the country curfew from 22:00 to 04:00, every night on the way home from work I find one or two blocks, I hand them my documents they always ask me questions to check, I answer part in English and part in Thai, then they let me go. I read in the newspapers that every night at least fifty people are arrested for violating the curfew.

A separate chapter deserves the precautions taken in individual condominiums. First of all, all the condominium swimming pools have been closed and asked to inform the condominium administration if you have a fever or have returned from a trip abroad. Where I live, bottles of hand sanitizer were placed before the door and then on a table between the elevators. The elevators have been divided into three with tape on the floor and now only three people can get on them if they are wearing masks and please stand facing outwards. Here you sometimes think that you are falling into obsessive-compulsive behaviors, but then you just need to look at some graphs and you think that you had a great chance to be in Thailand at the outbreak of this pandemic.

I hope that this huge tragedy will serve as a lesson to Western countries, because it is absolutely no coincidence that the countries of South East Asia are managing to contain the contagion and I recommend reading this article.
