Uno dei templi più importanti di Chiang Mai è il wat chedi luang con il suo imponente chedi semi distrutto da un terremoto. Non voglio parlare ora della storia o della bellezza di questo tempio...ma accompagnarvi a fare un giro intorno al chedi fino a scoprire una statua che colpisce per la bruttezza del soggetto raffigurato. La scultura rappresenta il monaco Tan Pra Maha Kajjana, detto anche il "monaco grasso".
La sua storia racconta che Tan Pra Maha Kajjana era un santo monaco vissuto al tempo dell'ultima incarnazione di Buddha. Era di una bellezza straordinaria, tanto che in molti lo scambiavano per il Buddha e lui si premurava sempre di smentire quanti cadevano in questo errore. Un giorno accadde un episodio che lo turbò molto. Un altro monaco nell'ammirarne la bellezza formulò il pensiero che gli sarebbe tanto piaciuto essere una donna per innamorarsi di Tan Pra Maha Kajjana. Tale desiderio evidentemente venne considerato blasfemo e il monaco venne punito con la sua immediata transizione al sesso femminile.
Tan Pra Maha Kajjana rimase sconvolto, sentendosi in colpa per essere stato causa di pensieri impuri e, di conseguenza, di una punizione di tale severità. Chiese allora di diventare brutto e grasso in modo di non poter più suscitare desideri insani nei confratelli. E venne immediatamente accontentato diventando così il "monaco brutto e grasso".

One of the most important temples of Chiang Mai is the wat chedi luang with its imposing chedi half-destroyed by an earthquake. I don't want to talk about the history or the beauty of this temple now...but take you for a walk around the chedi until you discover a statue that strikes you for the ugliness of the subject depicted. The sculpture represents the monk Tan Pra Maha Kajjana, also known as the "fat monk".
Its story tells that Tan Pra Maha Kajjana was a holy monk who lived at the time of the last incarnation of Buddha. He was of extraordinary beauty, so much so that many people mistaken him for the Buddha and he always took care to deny those who fell into this error. One day an episode happened that disturbed him a lot. Another monk, while admiring its beauty, formulated the thought that he would have liked to be a woman to fall in love with Tan Pra Maha Kajjana. This desire was evidently considered blasphemous and the monk was punished with his immediate transition to the female sex.
Tan Pra Maha Kajjana was shocked, feeling guilty for having been the cause of impure thoughts and, consequently, of a punishment of such severity. He then asked to become ugly and fat so that he could no longer arouse insane desires in his confreres. And he was immediately satisfied, thus becoming the "ugly and fat monk".
