La Thailandia è certamente nota per i suoi posti di mare e in particolare per le molte isole del sud. Purtroppo la maggior parte delle località più spettacolari sono oggi rovinate a causa del turismo di massa, tanto da far prendere la decisione di una chiusura a tempo indeterminato della magnifica Maya bay ad esempio. Il rischio di rimanere delusi è dunque molto elevato. Nel caso siate amanti del mare senza sentire l'esigenza di trascorrere il tempo libero in locali ad alto tasso alcolico e musica scassa orecchie posso consigliarvi una piccola isola, koh yao noi che si trova nel tratto di mare tra Phuket e Krabi. Ho trascorso lì le ferie nella settimana tra Natale e Capodanno 2018. In fondo al post potete trovare i link agli album di foto.
Per raggiungere l'isola si può arrivare in aereo a Phuket o a Krabi e da qui prendere il traghetto o la barca veloce. Vi consiglio però il traghetto che vi consentirà di godere della vista delle numerose isole della baia di Phang Nga, e la lentezza della traversata vi aiuterà ad entrare nell'atmosfera calma e rallentata dell'isola.
Arrivati al molo troverete diversi pick-up in attesa che vi condurranno al vostro hotel o resort. Io ho alloggiato ai Namtok Bungalows sul lato est dell'isola.
Si tratta di una struttura molto semplice, vicinissima alla spiaggia e alle cascate, anche se a dicembre queste erano asciutte. L'isola ha dimensioni ridotte e si gira bene sia in motorino che a piedi. Non è ancora invasa dal turismo di massa e quasi sempre le spiagge appaiono praticamente deserte. Da qui poi potrete facilmente raggiungere alcune delle isole nelle vicinanze molto interessanti. La gita più breve ma tra le più suggestive è a koh nok, dove si può raggiungere un punto di osservazione tramite un sentiero molto ripido.
Un'altra gita che consiglio è una giornata in catamarano tra i vari isolotti, per me è stata la prima volta su un'imbarcazione a vela ed è stata davvero un'esperienza molto piacevole e
l'equipaggio gentile e disponibile. Ho potuto apprezzare la navigazione nel silenzio assoluto,
guidando seguendo la direzione del vento in una meravigliosa giornata di sole.
Un'altra caratteristica dell'isola sono i numerosi buceri, grandi uccelli dallo straordinario becco, verso il tramonto frequentavano molto gli alberi del Namtok Bungalows, ma sono comunque visibili su tutta l'isola. Nell'isola di koh nok ho avuto anche il piacere di ammirare un'aquila ed è sempre una bella visione.
Anche se piccola l'isola ha molte spiagge alcune facilmente raggiungibili a piedi, altre richiedono un percorso tra motorino e camminata ma ne vale sempre la pena.
La vita sull'isola è all'impronta della tranquillità, la popolazione è molto cordiale e accogliente. In tutta koh yao noi non troverete un solo tempio buddista ma solo moschee essendo gli abitanti tutti di fede islamica. Questo implica che non troverete alcool in vendita nei supermercati, ma nei ristoranti viene servito senza problemi. Ci sono molti ristoranti alcuni anche eleganti e la qualità è sempre buona, c'è anche un ristorante italiano dove ho cenato la sera di Natale giusto per vivere un po' di atmosfera natalizia.

Thailand is certainly known for its seaside resorts and in particular the many islands in the south. Unfortunately, most of the most spectacular locations are now ruined due to mass tourism, so much so that the decision has been taken to close indefinitely the magnificent Maya bay for example. The risk of disappointment is therefore very high. If you love the sea but don't feel the need to spend your free time in clubs with a high level of alcohol and ear-shattering music, I can recommend a small island, koh yao noi, located in the stretch of sea between Phuket and Krabi. I spent my holiday there in the week between Christmas and New Year 2018. At the bottom of the post you can find links to the photo albums.
To get to the island you can fly into Phuket or Krabi and from there take the ferry or fast boat. I recommend the ferry, however, as it will allow you to enjoy the view of the many islands in Phang Nga Bay, and the slow pace of the crossing will help you enter the calm and slow atmosphere of the island.
When you arrive at the pier you will find several pick-ups waiting to take you to your hotel or resort. I stayed at Namtok Bungalows on the east side of the island.
It is a very simple structure, very close to the beach and the waterfalls, although in December these were dry. The island is small and is easy to get around by moped or on foot. The island has not yet been invaded by mass tourism and the beaches are almost always deserted. From here you can easily reach some of the interesting nearby islands. The shortest but most impressive trip is to koh nok, where you can reach an observation point via a very steep path.
Another trip that I recommend is a day on a catamaran among the various islets, for me it was the first time on a sailing boat and it was really a very pleasant experience and the crew was friendly and helpful.
I was able to enjoy sailing in absolute silence, driving in the direction of the wind on a beautiful sunny day.
Another characteristic of the island are the numerous hornbills, big birds with an extraordinary beak, towards sunset they were very frequent on the trees of Namtok Bungalows, but they are still visible all over the island. In the island of koh nok I had also the pleasure to admire an eagle and it is always a beautiful sight.
Even if small the island has a lot of beaches some easily reachable by foot, others require a path between scooter and walk but it is always worth it.
Life on the island is very quiet, the population is very friendly and welcoming. In the whole of Koh Yao you will not find a single Buddhist temple, but only mosques, as the inhabitants are all of the Islamic faith. This implies that you will not find alcohol for sale in supermarkets, but in restaurants it is served without problems. There are many restaurants some of them even elegant and the quality is always good, there is also an Italian restaurant where I had dinner on Christmas Eve just to live a little bit of Christmas atmosphere.
