Nel caso amiate la vacanza al mare per trascorrere il tempo lento del riposo e aborriate i carnai discotecari o fricchettoni consiglio caldamente koh yao yai. Si tratta della sorella maggiore di koh yao noi dove ero stata nel 2018. Queste due isole si trovano nella baia di Phang Nga tra Pukhet e Krabi, nel sud della Thailandia. Qui la popolazione è praticamente tutta di cultura islamica, questo fa sì che non sia facile trovare alcool in vendita e anche diversi ristoranti ne sono sprovvisti. L'isola è molto verde e sono presenti anche molte coltivazioni di alberi da caucciù, altra risorsa per l'economia dell'isola è ovviamente la pesca. La sensazione generale è che il turismo sia una risorsa importante ma senza che abbia scatenato processi di sfruttamento delle risorse e eccessi di cemento alberghiero. Ad esempio le gite in barca sono riservate soltanto a voi e non verrete uniti ad altri gruppi. Nelle due escursioni che abbiamo fatto eravamo quindi soltanto in due con barche che potrebbero portare tranquillamente fino a quattro o cinque persone.
In pratica non si ha la sensazione che vogliano spremere il turista offrendo servizi di bassa qualità.
Ho alloggiato presso il Royal Yao Yai Island Beach Resort sulla spiaggia di Loh Pared. Il reaort è molto bello e sicuramente con un'ottima relazione qualità prezzo, con spiaggia privata, piscina e comodissimi lettini dove rilassarsi. Sulla stessa baia si trova un hotel molto famoso, interamente in legno il Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa che tra le sue strutture annovera un minuscolo bar sul molo, il Jetinn Teppan, dove è davvero piacevole fare aperitivo guardando il tramonto.
Un'altra spiaggia molto conosciuta di koh yao yai si trova all'estremo nord, una lunga striscia di sabbia che si estende verso koh yao noi, Lam head beach. La dimensione di questa spiaggia varia molto a seconda della marea. Nel 2018 avevo avuto modo di vederla dall'altra isola e mi era sembrata davvero spettacolare. Mentre quest'anno, forse a causa della luce diversa dovuta al cielo coperto e probabilmente anche da un livello di marea diverso, non mi ha fatto la stessa impressione di quattro anni fa.
Le attività da fare nell'isola sono tutte legate al mare il nostro hotel dispone anche di kayak che affitta gratuitamente. Noi abbiamo preferito fare due escursioni in barca la prima koh phi phi e altre isole intorno. Ho potuto così rivedere Maya bay che venne chiusa pochi mesi dopo aver avuto l'opportunità di farci un bagno. All'epoca ne ero rimasta molto delusa, il numero eccessivo di barche fin dentro la spiaggia, con uno spazio minimo lasciato ai bagnanti, con una confusione tipica da luogo turistico eccessivamente affollato aveva finito con l'infastidirmi impedendomi di goderne la bellezza. Ora la baia è off limits per le barche e i turisti possono arrivarci via terra dal lato opposto dell'isola. E' vietato entrare in acqua oltre i livello delle caviglie.
Per far rispettare quest'ultimo divieto la spiaggia pullula di inaricati dotati di fischietto che creano un certo inquinamento acustico. Forse l'elargizione di pesanti multe avrebbe un risultato più efficace e meno fastidioso per gli altri bagnanti. La seconda gita ha riguardato isole più vicine a koh yao yai, tra cui koh hong e la sua laguna.
Devo dire che mi piace molto viaggiare per mare, godendomi lo spettacolo delle isole che emergono numerose nella baia di Phang Nga. Mi auguro solo che le politiche di conservazione e protezione della natura vengano mantenute e che i turisti siano sempre più consapevoli della necessità di rispettare l'ambiente per poterne godere ancora a lungo.

In case you love a beach holiday to spend the slow time of rest and abhor discotheques or freaks I highly recommend koh yao yai. It is the big sister of koh yao noi where I had been in 2018. These two islands are located in Phang Nga Bay between Pukhet and Krabi in southern Thailand. The population here is practically all from an Islamic culture, which means that it is not easy to find alcohol for sale and several restaurants also lack it. The island is very green and there are also many rubber tree cultivations, another resource for the island's economy is obviously fishing. The general feeling is that tourism is an important resource, but without having triggered resource exploitation processes and excesses of hotel cement. For example, the boat trips are only for you and you will not be joined with other groups. On the two excursions we went on, there were only two of us in boats that could easily carry up to four or five people. In practice, you do not get the feeling that they want to squeeze the tourist by offering low-quality services. I stayed at the Royal Yao Yai Island Beach Resort on Loh Pared beach. The resort is very nice and definitely value for money, with a private beach, swimming pool and very comfortable sun loungers to relax on. On the same bay is a very famous hotel, entirely made of wood, the Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa, whose facilities include a tiny bar on the pier, the Jetinn Teppan, where it is really pleasant to have an aperitif while watching the sunset. Another well-known beach in Koh Yao Yai is located in the far north, Lam head beach, a long strip of sand stretching towards Koh Yao Noi. The size of this beach varies greatly depending on the tide. In 2018 I had had a chance to see it from the other island and I thought it was really spectacular. Whereas this year, perhaps because of the different light due to the overcast sky and probably also a different tide level, it did not make the same impression on me as four years ago. The activities to do on the island are all sea-related and our hotel also has kayaks that it rents free of charge. We preferred to do two boat trips the first to koh phi phi and other islands around. I was able to see Maya bay again, which was closed a few months after I had the opportunity to take a swim there. At the time I was very disappointed, the excessive number of boats all the way to the beach, with minimal space left for bathers, and the confusion typical of an overcrowded tourist spot had ended up annoying me, preventing me from enjoying its beauty. Now the bay is off limits to boats and tourists can get there by land from the opposite side of the island. It is forbidden to enter the water above ankle level. To enforce this latter prohibition, the beach is swarming with whistle-blowers who create some noise pollution. Perhaps heavy fines would be more effective and less annoying for other bathers. The second trip covered islands closer to koh yao yai, including koh hong and its lagoon. I must say that I really enjoy travelling by sea, enjoying the spectacle of the islands that emerge numerous in Phang Nga Bay. I only hope that nature conservation and protection policies are maintained and that tourists are increasingly aware of the need to respect the environment in order to enjoy it for a long time to come.
